What I Drank

One of the best Manhattans I've had the pleasure of imbibing. (Which, curiously, occurred in Brooklyn.) Look at that rich, pigeon's blood hue... Bonus was the sweetheart bartender, with his bow tie and sleeve garters and easy banter.
What I Drooled Over

A Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. At the Dubai Airshow, for which an acquaintance kindly secured me a trade pass. It proved to be a lovely afternoon spent with the military-industrial complex: tea and jet fumes, champagne and radar arrays, and a near-total lack of compunction or irony.
What I Read

The Last Werewolf because a friend of mine told me I must ("the narrator is your animus"). Fagels's translations of Homer because I needed to cleanse my palate after sampling Mitchell's new (misbegotten) version of the Iliad. All were acquired at Green Apple Books in San Francisco, one of the best bookstores in the country. {HIDDEN SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE: SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE.}
What I Bought

A set of the Farrar, Straus & Giroux editions of The Eagle of the Ninth series. I have a major weakness for stylized, 70s-flavored cover art like this. Which is why I'm still hanging on to my yellowing copies of the Bantam Spectra edition of A Wizard of Earthsea (art, Pauline Ellison), the DAW edition of Gate of Ivrel (art, Michael Whelan), and the Berkeley edition of Elric of Melniboné (art, Robert Gould).

A Botkier Helena hobo. I'm hard on my bags, so they usually end up lasting only about a year. When the time rolled around for a new one, luckily it coincided with a Botkier sample sale. Intelligent design, good materials: they're a pleasure to use. This one was probably the least blingiest design there; next time, I'll go for the pink snakeskin.
What I Smoked

Davidoff Ora-ïto White are my coffin nails of choice. I will also take the skinny "lady cigarette" Slims. This particular carton of the latter (from the Taipei duty free) all had these wonderfully grotesque Photoshopped visuals of rotting teeth, blackened lungs, etc. printed on the packs as a supposed deterrent. My favorite one is the erectile dysfunction version. If you smoke, your cigarette won't be able to get a hard-on.
What I'm Feeling Nostalgic Over

To paraphrase another badass gent, I will return.

Also, I am so with you on the book covers -- there are certain books that just never seem the same without the book jackets I first saw them in. It's a bit later, but I think part of the reason that I loved An Acceptable Time (Madeleine L'Engle) so much was that excellent, drawn cover.

I wish Bezos would get his people cracking on a transporter already instead of another Kindle.
OMG, I Googled An Acceptable Time to see what cover you're talking about, and now I think I know which one, but the results in Images also pulled up this: http://thequietus.com/articles/03088-co
